The evenings are getting darker, the cold weather is knocking at the door – it’s the perfect time of the year to grab a blanket, light the fire and curl up with a cosy classic. Here are five perfect autumn reads if you need some inspiration:
Nothing says comfort quite like trying to work out a classic puzzle, and this one is understandably one of Christie’s most famous and enduring works. A group of passengers alight the luxurious Orient Express and soon become stranded in a snowstorm. During this time, a heinous murder is committed, and it quickly becomes clear that someone on board must be guilty…

Equal parts comforting and hilarious, Northanger Abbey is a pitch perfect lampoon of gothic tropes in novels, making it a very fun read to delve into around the Halloween period. When young Catherine Moreland goes to Bath she soon makes an interesting slew of friends, eventually leading her to visit the titular Abbey itself. Is the abbey haunted? Filled with vampires? You’ll have to read to find out.
Most people are familiar with the story of Rebecca, but Daphne’s similarly tense My Cousin Rachel is an absolute treat for those looking for some gothic fiction with a punch. When a young man invites his deceased cousin’s wife to his country home after his mysterious death, it’s not long until he himself is captivated by Rachel’s mysterious allure…but is she all that she seems?
Both the Halloween and Christmas periods are perfect for some classic ghost stories. This compendium contains some of the most famous stories from pioneers in horror and will be sure to put a tingle up your spine. Best read late at night by candlelight for maximum effect.

Most people think of Middlemarch when it comes to George Eliot, but to miss The Mill on the Floss would be to do yourself a disservice. The plot focuses on the children of a mill owner and the financial struggles, societal pressures and other intricacies of Victorian England that impact their lives and their affection for one another. A true classic that deserves more attention.
