A term applied retrospectively to a group of poets who epitomised the spirit of an age, seeing themselves as guiding lights for their time, champions of the transformational power of the imagination. The key figures in the Romantics are generally held to be are William Blake (1757-1827), William Wordsworth (1770-1850), Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834), George Gordon, 6th Lord Byron (1788-1824), Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) and John Keats (1795-1821).
