With summer rearing its head, not only are the days getting warmer but the nights are too. What better time of the year to escape into the countryside and camp under a starry sky? This list of books to read beneath the stars will only compliment any camping weekend, with an array of fascinating astrology and space-themed reads. So get a campfire going for some light and warmth, take in the beauty of the stars above, and learn all there is to know about our countless twinkling cosmic neighbours... and what may lay beyond!
Kicking off this list with a classic Observer, this book on astronomy is the ideal beginning for anyone wanting to delve into the wonders of the cosmos. Even if you know little (or nothing at all) about what lies beyond the reaches of our planet, this vintage Observer is a wise place to start.
It's hard to look up at the endless lights in the nighttime sky and not realise just how small we really are. And that's no bad thing! There's so much yet to be discovered out there in the incomprehensibly vastness of space, which makes it such an awesome and fascinating thing to read about. The Size of the Universe will only reinforce that fact.
The first pick in this blog's trilogy of Life Science Library reads, this book of planets makes for a informative and intriguing read for any budding space explorers out there. While the planets may not be quite so visible in the midnight sky as the stars, they're still incredibly interesting to learn about as you look up from your campfire and take in the galactic wonders of the great beyond.
Next up we have an equally informative (though not quite so cosmic) book on the skies above. Though we live in an age in which sending spaceships and shuttles to other planets is more reality than science-fiction, learning how we mastered flight and took such great leaps towards exploring the skies remains as interesting as ever.
Finishing the Life Science Library section of this blog, Man and Space will address the wonder of how we sent living people from the ground we're standing on to the vastness of space above. From the first test flights to landing on the moon, Man and Space goes further than Flight, exploring not only how we reached for the skies but also how we are now reaching for the stars - and coming closer by the day!
Speaking of landing on the moon, this book covers everything you need to know about how we shot ourselves from planet earth to that great glowing orb in the sky! Including trials and solutions, The Invasion of the Moon tells all - from the early stages of preparation to the fateful moment Neil Armstrong took a small step for man but a giant leap for mankind!
Going back to classic Observer books, the Book of Unmanned Spaceflight is an educational read regarding the stages of spaceflight before we dared to put man inside of a spaceship. A great read in case the thought of shooting up into the endless dangers of the solar system is a little much for your liking!
Moving away from the factual and towards the fictional (or is it?), The Flying Saucer is a thrilling read about a UFO coming to planet earth from beyond. And who knows? Maybe there's a little more fact to stories such as this than we're aware of... *queue The X-Files theme tune*.
Ending on a light-hearted note, this collection of Douglas Adam's sci-fi comedy classic series makes for the perfect read for any lover of all things galactic. Besides, what better place is there for a campfire story than beneath the nighttime sky and sitting beside... well, a campfire?
