For a more magical adventure, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is an excellent choice. Filled with nonsensical poetry and entertaining word plays, this book – and its sequel – will take young readers on an unforgettable journey into a land bursting with colour and invention!
Witty, adventurous and endlessly imaginative, The Wind in the Willows has enchanted many generations of young readers. Kenneth Grahame’s much loved characters Mole, Water Rat and Badger, spend many happy summer days on the banks of the nearby river. Only one day they meet the incorrigible Toad whose reckless behaviour often lands his companions in trouble! The adventures and misadventures of these human-like animals are both humorous and hair raising, providing entertainment to readers of all ages.
A.A .Milne’s wonderful story about Winnie the Pooh and his animal friends is another brilliant summer holiday read. Who could fail to fall in love with a honey loving teddy bear, a timid piglet, a woeful donkey and many more enchanting animal characters – plus Christopher Robin of course! Younger and older children alike can enjoy the charm of L. M. Montgomery’s second ‘Anne’ book, Anne of Avonlea. The story follows Anne between the ages of sixteen and eighteen where she becomes a teacher at Avonlea school and tries to win the favour of her students. Older and wiser but as spirited as ever, Anne once again touches the hearts of all who get to know her. Montgomery’s ability to make her readers laugh and cry adds to the book’s charm and readers cannot fail to fall in love with this story.
Beatrix’s Potter’s deep love and understanding for animals and the countryside shines through the pages of this charming book. Written for older children, it tells the story of William and Alexander’s Travelling Circus. It is no ordinary circus, for it is hidden from humans by fairy magic and serves to entertain the animals of England. Fun and imaginative, this magical story is the perfect choice for a summer holiday reading list!
The Hobbit, like most of the books on this list, hardly needs explaining. An all time classic, the story of Bilbo Baggins and his unexpected adventure is loved by millions. Leaving his peaceful home in the Shire, Bilbo embarks on a treacherous journey to the Lonely Mountain, once home to the dwarves. With its epic landscapes, eclectic characters, descriptive language and tense plot, The Hobbit is one of those books everyone should read at least once. With long summer days ahead and no school work to fill them, it’s the perfect time to start reading this epic.
This is a great book for young readers who enjoy a story with a little more jeopardy. The Swiss Family Robinson tells the tale of a shipwrecked family and their isolated existence on a remote island. Desperate to survive in this primitive place, they learn how to fend for themselves, building shelter and catching food just to stay alive. Though a little dated in places, it is a fascinating read about family, nature and survival.
