Today is a day to appreciate all things American - and, of course, as an online vintage bookstore, authors are at the top of our list! There are many titans of classic American literature covering a wide range of genres. Today we're going to be taking a look at just a few, and appreciating all they left for us to enjoy even long after their time.
Winner of the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature, John Steinbeck is remembered for his realistic, and often harrowing, written works. Ripe with their exploration of social issues, their sympathetic humour, and their everyman dilemmas, Steinbeck's works are now considered classics of western literature. His most notable titles include the tragic Of Mice & Men novella, and his critically acclaimed (like many of his works) The Grapes of Wrath novel. These books remain popular and in print today, often taught in schools in the US and the UK, showing us what a lasting impact Steinbeck left in the literary world.

Named the "Father of American Literature" by William Faulkner and praised as one of the greatest humorists in the United States, Mark Twain is perhaps best remembered for his legendary works The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - the latter often being referred to as the "Great American Novel." He has earned a great deal of praise for his sharp wit, satire, and humorous social commentary, cementing himself as one of the true giants of American Literature over the last few centuries.
Remembered for great novels such as Tender if the Night, The Last Tycoon, and, of course, The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald was a unique writer whose works continue to remain prominent today - both on the page and the big screen through adaptations. However, despite the success of his work today, he was only moderately successful during his lifetime with four finished novels. Nonetheless, his writing style and topics, including flamboyance and excess in what he termed the "Jazz Age", have contributed to his unique works being remembered fondly long after his untimely death at the age of 44.

Though he published many works, J. D. Salinger is best known by many for his classic novel The Catcher in the Rye. It was an immediate success after being published, especially among young readers due to its themes of adolescent alienation and the loss of innocence. Though this was his most notable work, Salinger continued to write until his death at the ripe old age of 91, and he will be remembered fondly in the literary community for many more years to come.
