Reader's note

A wonderful copy of William Makepeace Thackeray’s Vanity Fair. Thackeray’s classic novel follows the lives of Beck Sharp, an ambitious and ruthless orphan keen to claw her way to the top, and her companion Amelia Sedley, pampered and sentimental and part of a wealthy family, during the Napoleonic Wars. His trademark satirical style is present throughout as he comments of both greed and pretentions of English Society, as well as the failings of human nature. This edition is wonderful illustrated by Robin Jacques. ‘“How can you - how dare you have such wicked, revengeful thoughts?” “Revenge may be wicked, but it’s natural,” answered Miss Rebecca. “I’m no angel.” And, to say the truth, she certainly was not.’
