Reader's note

Ashenden or The British Agent is, as Mr. Maugham tells us in the preface, a book founded on his experiences of Secret Service while working for the Intelligence Department during the 1914-18 war, but rearranged for the purposes of fiction. Ashenden, an author, is sent by Colonel R. to take charge of a group of Allied agents, with his headquarters in Geneva. He has to be continually alert, for enemy agents are equally active. His adventures are varied: he accompanies a hairless Mexican general to Italy to meet a Greek who is carrying a vital document; he compels a woman to decoy her lover over the frontier; he traps an English traitor who is secretly working for Germany and more.
