Chapter 1 showcases the story of Marius and Cosette - Le lecteur a compris qu'Éponine, ayant reconnu à travers la grille l'habitante de cette rue Plumet où Magnon l'avait envoyée, avait commencé par écarter les bandits de la rue Plumet, puis y avait conduit Marius, et qu'après plusieurs jours d'extase devant cette grille, Marius, entraîné par cette force qui pousse le fer vers l'aimant et l'amoureux vers les pierres dont est faite la maison de celle qu'il aime, avait fini par entrer dans le jardin de Cosette comme Roméo dans le jardin de Juliette. Cela même lui avait été plus facile qu'à Roméo; Roméo était obligé d'escalader un mur, Marius n'eut qu'à forcer un peu un des barreaux de la grille décrépite qui vacillait dans son alvéole rouillé, à la manière des dents des vieilles gens.
