Reader's note

A distinguished Scotsman has recently said that he abstains from reading the history of his native country for two sufficient reasons - first, because it is too painful; and, secondly, because it is not interesting. To the first objection it may be replied that, if we choose to dwell on the darker sides of it, all human history presents a subject of contemplation from which we should prefer to avert our eyes. It is true that in the records of mankind we find no flawless characters, and no cause, however noble, without some baser admixture; but is it not precisely by reason of this fact that, human nature being what it is, we find our chief interest and instruction in the record of the past?
