Reader's note

Robert Louis Stevenson was born on 13th November 1850, at Edinburgh, and died in 1894. He was extremely delicate as a child, nervous and imaginative, but he intended to be a civil engineer like his father, and eventually went to Edinburgh University to study engineering. Later he gave up the idea, and owing to illness was sent to the south of France, where he wrote several books. Then he married, and one wet day during the summer holidays began to write a buccaneer tale about buried treasure to amuse his young stepson, Lloyd Osbourne. The book, after running as a serial story in a children’s magazine, was published in 1883 as ‘Treasure Island’. It was an once a tremendous success, and by far the best boys’ book he ever wrote.
