Reader's note

This beautiful trio of books would make an excellent gift for any fan of tragic romance novels with a sad ending. Wuthering Heights is about a destructive, passionate love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff. After Catherine marries a wealthier man for social standing, a bitter Heathcliff leaves and later returns to enact a long and cruel revenge on those he feels wronged him. The Mill on the Floss is a novel about the Tulliver siblings, intelligent and passionate Maggie and her conventional brother Tom. The story traces their lives, highlighting the tension between their individual desires and the rigid social expectations of their society. Maggie secretly falls for the disabled, intellectual Mr. Wakem's son, Philip, but is forbidden from seeing him by Tom. Later, an infatuation with the charming but engaged Stephen Guest leads to a public scandal that isolates Maggie. Tess of the d'Urbervilles is the tragic story of a young, poor woman, Tess Durbeyfield. After being sent to the wealthy d'Urberville estate to "claim kin," she is seduced and raped by Alec d'Urberville. Her life continues to be shaped by this tragedy, her relationships with Angel Clare and Alec, and societal judgment before culminating in a final, violent act and her own execution.
