Reader's note

This brilliant title is part of the Pelican anthropology library. In this book, Professor Levi-Strauss analyses the totemism theories of many other scholars and then demolishes the 'problem' by suggesting that the whole concept has been a figment of Western minds, intent on classifying everything and determined to relegate certain human mental attitudes to the realm of 'primitive'. The work makes a surprising (and convincing) reference to some neglected observations and leads on naturally to Levi-Strauss's most famous book 'The Savage Mind'. It stands in fact as an excellent introduction to the structuralist approach and to the thought of one of the most distinguished and interesting minds of our time. This is a great book to add to any vintage reference library.
