Reader's note

This decorative vintage book is a 1963 edition of These Ruins Are Inhabited by Muriel Beadle. After winning a Nobel prize, it gave his wife and Muriel a chance to know England, not as tourists but more as the English know it. It also gave the chance to visit Europe's 'ruins'. Being a writer by nature and profession, Beadle set down the family's many experiences and impressions into this delightful book. It is sheer enjoyment; and it also offers a discerning commentary on English and American education, both at the university level and at secondary schools.
