Reader's note

Harold Ross, creator and editor of the New Yorker from its foundation in 1925 until his death in 1951, is one of the legends of American journalism. Prickly, unpredictable, uncultured, a dedicated perfectionist with a passion for facts, and a hopeless administrator who fired as fast as he hired, Ross alternatively exasperated and inspired those who worked for him. As Thurber, who was one of them, puts it: ‘There is only one word that describes him perfectly and that is Ross.’ In this full length portrait, which he calls an ordeal of love, Thurber deploy into a seemingly bottomless fund of very funny anecdotes to do with Ross’s relations with his artists and writers, his fear of women, his cat scratching feud with Alexander Woollcott, the drama critic, and the financial vagueness that cost him $60,000 to an embezzler. The result is another vintage Thurber.
