Reader's note

This book will have any reader roaring with laughter! In order to explain his actions for bringing such horrible poetry to light, the compiler of this book has written a preface - The bulk of English poetry is bad. This fact cannot be disputed, but any reader who wishes to confirm it by his own observation has only to scrutinise a representative collection of books of verse published over the past six centuries or so. But note that word 'representative', please. Chaucer is not representative of medieval poetry, Spenser is not representative of Elizabethan poetry, nor Milton nor Shelley nor Tennyson of the periods in which they lived. These are the peaks, but 'representative' poetry must be sought in the foot-hills. Truly representative poetry must be looked for in the under-brush. - see if you agree by picking up this fantastic book!
