Reader's note

Beautiful both inside and out, this book is the perfect gift for anyone who has an appreciation for nature. The introduction shows the author's viewpoint perfectly - As we wander through the countless streets of our crowded cities, we can scarcely realise that ages ago Britain possessed enormous woods, and that her people lived and hunted and fought in the dark recesses of those ancient forests. How different is the England of modern days! Great belts of land have been cleared, and where once the sturdy oak and stately beech reigned supreme, we now find rich pasture lands and fields of waving corn. - he laments the loss of the woodlands and this is why he wrote this book to ensure that there is lasting appreciation for what is left. Illustrated with small line drawing and multiple full colour plates throughout, this is one title that will make a fine addition to any reference library.
