Reader's note

The story follows best friends Valentine and Proteus; Valentine travels to Milan and falls for Silvia, but when Proteus follows, he too falls for Silvia, betraying his own girlfriend, Julia. Proteus reveals Valentine's elopement plans, leading to Valentine's banishment and his becoming leader of outlaws in the forest. Julia, disguised as a boy, also travels to Milan to find Proteus. The play climaxes with Proteus attempting to rape the captured Silvia, only to be stopped by the returning Valentine, who offers to yield Silvia to him out of friendship. Julia's identity is revealed, Proteus repents, and the Duke, impressed by Valentine, grants pardons and approves the marriage of Valentine and Silvia, while Proteus is reunited with Julia
