Reader's note

Learn more about this history of Christmas with this fantastic vintage book! The first day of Christmas, my true love sent to me, A partridge in a pear tree' And so the old song runs on, through all 12 verses. But how many of us know the significance of the 12 days on which such a curious selection of gifts were presented to a loved one? The linking of the pagan celebrations of the passing of the winter solstace with the greatest Christian festival has bequeathed to us a festive season that incorporates a strange medley of pagan and Christian customs. The spiritual element of Christmas still inspires all branches of the Christian faith and the more mundane elements are expressed by the simple tradition of good friendships. The authors of this book have assembled a literary museum in this title of the traditions and observances of this wonderful time of the year.
