Reader's note

This classic penguin will add a splash of green to your bookshelf. Originally published in 1927, The Three Taps is one of the most engaging detective stories you will ever read. The setting of the death (suicide, or murder?) is a gas-lit English country inn near a fishing river. The police, of course, investigate; and so do Miles Bredon and his wife, in the interests of the indescribable company with the deceased had been heavily insured. The three taps refer to the gas taps in Mr. Mottram's bedroom. The reader has exactly the same material for the solution as Bredon has: but the reader is more than likely to lay the book down exclaiming 'Why on earth didn't I think of that?'.
