Reader's note

The story of The Third Man was never intended for publication, but it had to be written so that the film could be based and built upon it. This volume contains the original version. Many cuts and changes were later made, some of them owing to the requirements of the International Authorities in Vienna, from whom permission to shoot the film there had to be obtained. Graham Greene tells in the preface how, years before, he had jotted down on the flap of an envelope an opening paragraph for a story - a man suddenly sees in a crowd a friend whose burial he had attended the previous week. This idea he used for the highly dramatic plot of The Third Man, which, set in devastated Vienna just after the War, is concerned with ‘the penicillin racket’.
