Reader's note

This 1963 edition of The Teachers by G.W. Target aroused comment and controversy, on its first publication, in both the religious and scholastic press. This powerful novel exposes sadism and immortality lurking behind the professional masks of the characters, who are members of the staff of imaginary London primary school. With a technique which is reminiscent of James Joyce, the author covers the events of one day in the life of the school with consecutive accounts of the movements of each teacher, recounted in the appropriate language. It is no ordinary day: during the night one of the classrooms has been wrecked and filthily defiled. In their attempts to discover the culprits the teachers are forced to examine the effects of their own conduct anew.
