Reader's note

Brilliant in every conceivable way, this first edition version of The Sleep of Reason deserves your attention! This title is set in the Midlands town where Lewis Eliot grew up and to which he returns to from time to time. The horror arises from a murder trial in this small place, on which is focussed the hypnotised attention of the nation. From it emerges a series of portraits in shock; each of the people involved, to a greater or lesser extent, seems to have frozen emotionally at a point where his consciousness and conscience will admit no more. With the theme of the loneliness of the individual in the crowd being prevalent, this isn't your average crime novel, this is a marvellous piece of literature that you will want to read over and over again.
