Reader's note

The Rosemary Tree by Elizabeth Goudge is a delightful novel of modern Devonshire in which you will meet John Wentworth, a country vicar far less ineffectual than he feels himself to be; Daphne, who hardly realises how much she loves her exasperating husband; and their children, Pat, Margery and Winkle. With them lives Harriet, who had been John's nannie, and then housekeeper at the vicarage in those far-off, halcyon days when she, not Daphne, did nearly all the work. Even now, they also said they could not go without Harriet. If she would have believed them, Harriet would have been a much happier woman, though not, paradoxically, the woman they couldn't do without...
