Reader's note

The Penguin Shakespeare presents this 1962 edition of The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, edited from the original text by G.B. Harrison. Hamlet was written between 1598 and the summer of 1602, and probably during the winter of 1601-2. It was a time of great troubles, some of which are reflected in the play itself. In February, 1601, the Earl of Essex, who was universally regarded as a national hero, after sixteen months' political exile from Court made his futile rebellion and was executed. His death caused vast gloom and a general feeling of cynical disillusion, which is reflected in many plays and books.
