Reader's note

A wonderful copy of Jane Austen’s Emma. Emma Woodhouse is beautiful, intelligent and spoilt, with a conviction that she is always right, despite her lack of experience. Emma’s friend Miss Taylor has recently married Mr. Weston. Having been the person to have introduced them, Emma decides that she has a talent for matchmaking and decides to put her newfound interest to the test, blind to the potential consequences and unheeding the advice and judgement of the considerate Mr. Knightley. This edition includes appendices, notes on customs and a character list. ‘You will puff her up with such ideas of her own beauty, and of what she has a claim to, that in a little while nobody within her reach will be good enough for her. Vanity working on a weak head produces every sort of mischief. Nothing so easy as for a young lady to raise her expectations too high.’
