Reader's note

This 1965 edition of The Origins and Growth of Biology is a history of the science of life and the struggle against disease. It was Hippocrates, in the fifth century B.C. who first pronounced that disease, far from being an Act of God, had natural causes and could be treated scientifically. Later Aristotle made formidable additions to the knowledge and understanding of nature. Though the torch of science burned very low in the Dark Ages, it began to flare once again with the dissection work of Andreas Vesalius in the sixteenth century, and thereafter the study of the human body, of animals, and plants proceeded at a mounting tempo, in the hands of such great men as Harvey, Linnaeus, Darwin, Mendel, Pasteur, and Lister.
