Reader's note

Our vintage books make beautiful literary gifts. The Observer's Book of Small Craft is a delightful dose of nostalgia and a lovely gift for you or your favourite bookworm. The progress in use, numbers and design of “small craft” has rightly been called “The Yachting Explosion”. Although this book cannot pretend to be comprehensive it contains a fund of information for both “novices” and experienced sailors. “Tall ships” of today and of the past, the evolution of watersport, modern design and construction, and the whole organisation of “seafaring” are discussed in the early chapters. The main part of the book is devoted to the identification of a representative selection of sailing cruisers, offshore races, dinghies, keelboats and powerboats. Many have achieved International racing fame, while others are typical of the small craft used by the family sailor. To assist the observer, the appendices include a glossary of sailing terms, lists of the craft described in the identification sections, and illustrated sail insignia of a large number of small sailing craft. The book is profusely illustrated throughout with line drawings and black-and-white photography, and there is an attractive and useful colour section.
