Reader's note

First published as long ago as 1868, this novel is one of the first and best examples of what has now been labelled the ‘detective story’. The plot concerns the disappearance of a fabulous yellow diamond, a suicide, the almost Chandleresque results produced by opium, and finally a murder. To help solve the mystery, the services of Sergeant Cuff are sought. He is the earliest of those well-loved fictional detectives, whose ingenuity astounds and whose personal idiosyncrasies delight. One of the most remarkable features of the book is the method by which the story is narrated. By letting the various people who take part in the action tell their own parts of the story, Wilkie Collins obtains a much greater depth of character than is usual in this kind of fiction.
