Reader's note

This vintage book would make a delightful addition to any library. The Moon and Sixpence was the fruit of its author’s visit to Tahiti, where the artist Gauguin had lived, and its publication followed immediately after that of what many critics and readers still consider his greatest work, Of Human Bondage. It is a study of artistic temperament. Charles Strickland, a London stockbroker in middle life, suddenly abandons his business career, his wife, and all the ties which hold him to conventional society, to follow the imperative call to translate his interior visions into paint. After years of struggle in Paris, where he fails completely to achieve recognition, he sets out for Tahiti. Title: The Moon and Sixpence
