Reader's note

There is a sparkling freshness and humour in these tales of the animals of the Borneo jungle, who met every night at the drinking pool where no animals was permitted to kill, so the bees could buss round the Bee-eater with impunity, and ‘the Ant-eater nearly bit off his long tongue with vexation at the ants that ran to and from over his feet.’ the animals were worried because the White Man was coming closer and closer to their haunts, chopping down the trees and burning them. Each night there were discussions as to how the Man could be stopped. The Flying Fox, the Python, the Sloe Loris, and the Bruang the Bear, all made suggestions, mainly in the form of stories, and these are the old folk tales of Borneo which in this telling keep their essential simplicity with the salty humour of the genuine folk-tale.
