Reader's note

A 1963 edition of The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. This is something of a classic in the field of crime thrillers - a field in which Dashiell Hammett was among the first 'shock troops'. Like Raymond Chandler he screwed up a style so taut that it twangs between the paragraphs. Aamusal Spade, San Francisco private eye, had nerves, not of steel, but chrome-vanadium. A blunt instrument of justice, he coped with trouble by walking right into it. Miss Wonderly, when she appeared to him for protection, would have done well to be more precise about the details,- might have mentioned, perhaps, the dark Mr Cairo and the jelly-fat Mr Guttman.
