Reader's note

A 1966 first edition of The Last Steam Locomotives of British Railways by P. Ransome-Wallis. The year 1955 saw the beginning of the end of steam on the railways of Great Britain. From that year, no new designs were built and the steam locomotive began to disappear with increasing momentum from the land of its birth. In this book, the author of many nooks on railway subjects, presents a well-illustrated survey of those locomotives which were operating British Railways Trains during the final years of steam. A concise history and description of each class is given in the captions, and a table of dimensions, together with an informative appendix on steam locomotive classification, help to make this book a valuable work of reference for the specialist as well as a source of nostalgic pleasure for all who have loved steam and are sad at its passing.
