Reader's note

Inaugurated in Amsterdam in 1948, the World Council of Churches is an Organization of the principal non-Roman Christian Communities, Orthodox, Anglican, Lutheran, and Reformed, whose object is to work and pray formutal understanding and so-operation between Crhstiand throughout the world. The Council has over one hundred and sixty member churches in forty-three countries, and will hold its Second Assembly at Evanston, Illinois, in August 1954. The main topic for discussions is Christ, the Hope of the World. The bishop of Chichester, Dr G.K.A.Bell has prepared this book to explain the Council’s purpose and aspirations, He describes the formations of the Council, its first assembly at Amsterdam in 1948, its development since then and its work in connexion with the international affairs, the race questions, the refugee problem, Evangelization, and wider Church relations.
