Reader's note

Victor Marie Hugo was born at Besancon on 26th February, 1802. As his father was in active service in Italy and Spain, Hugo saw much of these countries before going to Paris. He wrote verse and many dramas and novels, besides entering into the thick of the political struggle of 1848. For a time he was exiled in the Channel Islands, where much of his best work was produced, but 1870 he returned to Paris, where he died 2nd May, 1885. This book first appeared in 1830.
