Reader's note

A colourful 1963 edition of The Hour of Maximum Danger by James Barlow! The author states: 'I intended this novel to be a warning: it has unhappily turned out to be more like a prophecy. The curious resemblances of my story to the sensational disclosures of the Profumo case, to the episode of Barbara Fell, and to the Vassall affair will seem far less curious to the reader who appreciates how I came to write this book. In fact it seems to me that such fictional characters as that of the adroit Communist diplomat, Gouseev; the devastating model-girl obscenely trapped by a cynical photographer; the refugee scientist; the scatter-rained redheaded telephone-girl; the disgruntled factory hand - people in walk of life widely separated and not normally associated with treason or espionage - might well be included by any writer.’
