Reader's note

This lovely little pocket-book is a 1966 edition of The History of Mr. Polly by H. G. Wells! As a boy Alfred Polly preferred reading and bicycling through the countryside to learning his trade as a milliner - a preference which was indirectly responsible for a bruised heart and his regrettable marriage with his cousin Miriam. When middle age began to creep up on him his bicycle no longer provided a means of escape from the squalor of his home, nor did his ability for concocting fine phrases relieve the indigestion that was a symptom of his unhealthy environment. However, one day he miraculously discovered that 'if the world does not please you, you can change it.' His method of changing it was daring and dramatic, but even then he had a second ordeal to undergo before he succeeded in adjusting circumstances to his satisfaction.
