Reader's note

The Guide to Modern Thought will enable the intelligent ‘man in the street’ to understand the many fascinating aspects of modern thought discussed to-day in books, lectures, and sermons. Dr. Joad here assumes in the reader no previous acquaintance with the subjects treated: avoiding technical terms, he surveys contemporary views on physics, biology and psychology, and traces their implications. From nineteenth-century materialism he moves to modern materialism as influenced by Pavlov and Behaviourism. Sections on “The World of Modern Physics”,, “Current Theories of Life and Matter” and “Vitalism and Creative Evolution” are followed by arresting chapters on “Abnormal Psychical Phenomena” and “Psychoanalysis and its Effects”.
