Reader's note

It is said that Englishmen tend to make excellent diaries particularly in war, and Raleigh Trevelyn's diary, covering his part in the fighting at Anzio in the early months of 1944, takes its place in this fine literary heritage. Trevelyan, whose life hitherto had followed a conventional pattern, found himself, a raw twenty-year-old subaltern serving with an infantry battalion at close quarters with the enemy, often in positions of great tactical advantage, in one of the strangest and grimmest, and certainly one of the most unsung battlefields of the second world war. This truly moving account will open anyone's eyes to the hardships the author faced. An excellent gift for anyone who is interested in the human cost of war.
