Reader's note

‘The aim of this book is to produce a collection of stories which can be read both by and to young children. Each story has been chosen because it has been well-told, simply told, and, nearly always, briefly told. My main preoccupation has been diversity, and apart from the two stories adapted from Hans Christain Andersen, each author has only been represented once. I have been careful to include folk tales, some of them little known and some of them old favourites, stories of magic and adventure and stories of everyday things like umbrellas, helicopters and building sites.’ - note from the editor. This book also contains beautiful illustrations from Shirely Hughes which bring each story to life.
