Reader's note

The Day of The Triffids is one of the very few books of its kind that can stand comparison to the astonishing science-novels of H. G. Wells. It is fantastic, frightening, but entirely plausible; for John Wyndham combines an extraordinarily inventive imagination with the technical skill of a first-class writer. Not only does he make the story seem scientifically possible, but the characters he creates are living people shaken out of civilisation they know into the horror of a world dominated by triffids. Seven-foot-tall, grotesque and dangerous plants originally cultivated for their high-grade oil but when a universal disaster allows them to turn the tables on their human directors, they become an active and dreadful menace.
