Reader's note

This delightful edition of Hilaire Belloc is a perfect addition to any library. Hilaire Belloc was born at La Celle, St Cloud, a village on the outskirts of Paris, in 1870, In 1878 hii mother settled in Sussex and in 1882 he went to the Oratory School at Edgbaston which he left in 1887. He soon took up journalism in London. In the year 1891/2 he did his compulsory military training in France and in October 1892 he returned to England to enter Balliol College, Oxford with a history scholarship. During his three years there he won many distinctions and left with brilliant first, having married in the previous year. He earned his living by coaching, by University Extension Lectures and by his books. His best-known works include The Path to Rome, The Fair men, The Servile State and many biographies, collections of essays, verse, travel books, historical studies and novels.
