Reader's note

This enchanting book will serve as an excellent introduction to those who visit the Cotswolds for the first time. The author notes in his preface - To a great extent unspotted by the first industrial revolution, the Cotswold region remained a triumph of the ordinary man. Here, for many centuries, he had gone about his affairs. And, in spite of the wealth from wool - even because of it - he achieved workaday seemliness and order which fills us with hope and despair. It seems in the nature of magic: it is but a mixture of imagination and common-sense, an exceptional combination. Many will come to see the sights and depart. But here and there will be one who realises that the spirit of these wolds is their remarkable characteristic and that it can only be absorbed slowly - learn to appreciate the English countryside with fresh eyes!
