Reader's note

Beautifully presented in a patterned green cover, this favourite children’s story is a great addition to any library! The tale revolves around four young orphans of a Royalist killed by the Roundheads. Edward, Humphrey, Alice and Edith go to live in an old forester’s cottage in the heart of the greenwood after their own home is burned down. The girls learn to cook and sew and keep house, and the boys hunt, shoot and farm. Their daily life is spiced with danger, for Cromwell’s men roam the forest in search of the fugitive King Charles and his supporters, and their identity must be kept secret. How they live in their hidden cottage, stalking deer and other animals that run wild in the forest, and how at last the family estate is restored to them, make a most refreshing and delightful English story, attractive to both boys and girls.
