Reader's note

Perry Mason pushed away his work and settled back in his swivel chair. The telephone rang, announcing John Northrup Kirby, two minutes early for an appointment made by his wife. Mr. Kirby told provocative story, about an attractive young woman on a lonely country road. She had a red gasoline can, he said, but no car - or keys - or money. No gentleman could have left her stranded. But, of course, Mr Kirby told his wife all about it. The Kirbys are a curiously cautious couple. They literally lead Mason up the garden path in this, one of the most turbulent and exciting cases of his career.
