Reader's note

This frightening story is one to be read by the window of a great library on a dark and stormy night. Countess Elizabeth Bathory was a beautiful woman, but terrified of growing old. She believed her beauty would be preserved only if she bathed in the blood of young and beautiful virgins. She was known as the Beast - and she got away with her crimes. Born of one of Hungary's most illustrious families nobody could touch her. Nor did she ever repent. The author has written a magnificent study in darkness and evil, his translator, the novelist and poet Alexander Trocchi, renders the medieval mood with terrifying immediacy. Read this mixture of historical fact and fiction!
