Reader's note

Gift this 1972 edition of The Art of T.S. Eliot by Helen Gardner to an Eliot fan! Mr. Eliot's first volume of poems was published more than thirty years ago, and he has by now created the taste by which he is enjoyed. His poetry is no longer the private possession of a small enthusiastic circle of admirers, but is read, as he himself says poets naturally wish to be read, by a 'large and miscellaneous audience'. This audience, though often baffled by difficulties in his thought and manner, as is apparent from the eagerness with which it buys books expounding the poems, has no doubt of his poetic greatness and feels a real desire to understand more fully both what he says and why he says it in the way he does.
