Reader's note

This absorbing novel is set in London: in Bloomsbury, St John’s Wood, the West End, and the tenement building near Paddington. The central character, Virginia, an ambitious young journalist, longs for the love she has never had from her sophisticated, divorced mother, the successful editor of a fashion magazine. So she makes an impulsive message, and a new world engulfs her, a world of cruelty and smells and drunkenness, and endless worry about money. But Virginia’s courage, and the Angel in the Corner whom her old nurse taught her to believe in, are with her through poverty and suffering and tragedy, until she gains a new peace. Spenser, the successful American businessman, the kindly Bengergs, Felix the clever young specialist, blowsy Mrs Matey, valiant little Lennie, and a host of other chargers make the story vividly alive.
