Reader's note

Within the rural setting of St Austin’s boarding school and with an almost predictable cast of characters: the god like headmaster, the teachers, splendid and comical, the good boys and the bad boys, the exotics and the eccentrics, Wodehouse creates a unique world of peculiar goings on. Here is the devious Pillingshot scoring a remarkable victory over Mellish, the Latin Master, reducing him to a baffled villain in a melodrama; and the genial unscrupulous Frederick Wackerbath Bradshaw, later in life to become so conspicuous a figure in a sensational company fraud case; the extraordinary manoeuvres of Charteris in his dealings with the knavish Bargee Man; the coolheaded contrivances of MacArthur, the best centre three-quarters the school had ever known and the saviour of Merevale’s in the house games; and many more. So many of the technical and comical stratagems that won Wodehouse universe fame as the creator of Jeeves and Wooster are evident in these immensely human tales. He enchants us with his magical gifts and his stories will live forever.
