Reader's note

Strolling Through Cottage England is, we think, the most delightful of W S Percy’s unconventional “Strolling” books. In it he has sent out to explore for himself, and to reveal to the reader, the varied beauty of English cottage homes. Investigating first the development of cottage architecture, he begins his stroll in the south-east corner of England and thence wanders in a leisurely fashion through the Cotswolds, down into Devonshire and Cornwall, up through the Midlands to Lancashire, the Lake District and Yorkshire, and thence back through East Anglia to the Home Counties. The half-timbered cottages north of the Sussex Downs, the stone cottages of the Cotswolds, the mud or ‘cob; houses of Somerset and Devon, the slate roofer cottages of the north, are all presented to us vividly by Mr Precy’s inimitable pen and magic pencil.
