Reader's note

Strangers and Brothers, being the first, has given its name to a series of remarkably novels by C.P.Snow, who is so often compared to Trollope. His is mainly a man’s world, but one in which tolerance, compassion and insight enable him to expose the deepest motives of men methodically but without prejudice. THese intricate stories about ordinary people are on a grand scale. In this minute study of a God with feet of clay Lewis Eliot, then a young barrister, records the story of George Passant, a Midland solicitor’s managing clerk, between the years 1925 and 1933. In his idealistic efforts to bring freedom to a group of young people, Passant almost sees himself as a Messiah. But society rounds on him, rather as it rounded on Socrates, when this freedom comes to include freedom from sexaul restraint. The action of the novel culminates in a trial at the assizes.
